Code of Conduct

Introduction to the Student Code of Conduct: While participating in a Terra Education Programs Abroad (TEPA) program, students are expected to act in a way that is respectful to the local community, promotes the educational goals of the experience, and ensures the safety and well-being of all participants. TEPA maintains a flexible framework that can be adapted in collaboration with partner schools and organizations to reflect their specific community guidelines and expectations.

Supervision: For safety reasons, students must remain within the designated program boundaries and follow supervision expectations established by TEPA or their school partner. Leaving the Home Base area or group without permission may be grounds for disciplinary action or early dismissal. During structured program hours, students must remain with their group or under the supervision of TEPA Program Staff. During unstructured or free time (if applicable), students may be permitted to be amongst peers without direct staff oversight in accordance with their program’s guidelines. At such times, students are expected to use sound judgment, adhere to all safety rules, and respect curfews and boundaries. If a student needs to remain at Home Base for any reason, they must inform a staff member in advance so appropriate supervision can be arranged.

Personal Safety & Wellbeing: Students are responsible for maintaining their own health and wellness. This includes taking prescribed medications as directed by their physician, staying hydrated, eating three balanced meals per day, using sunscreen and insect repellent as recommended, wearing culturally and weather-appropriate attire, and communicating any concerns, needs, or ailments promptly with TEPA Program Staff. Students are expected to follow all safety instructions and show respect toward all adults in positions of authority, including TEPA Program Staff, partner school chaperones, and local hosts.

No Tolerance of Alcohol, Tobacco Products and Other Drugs: The possession, use, or distribution of alcohol, tobacco products (including e-cigarettes or vaping devices), or illegal substances is strictly prohibited on all TEPA programs, regardless of local laws or parental consent. This policy also applies to the misuse of prescription or over-the-counter medications. Assisting others in prohibited behavior is also a violation. TEPA Program Staff may search belongings if there is reason to suspect possession or use of such substances. Any violation may result in immediate dismissal from the program at the student’s and family’s expense. Students are expected to report serious misconduct; failure to do so may also be considered a violation.

Knives and Other Weapons: Students may not bring, purchase, or use weapons of any kind, including knives, slingshots, or similar items. Matches and lighters are also prohibited due to fire safety concerns. In certain cultural or educational contexts (e.g., service tools, cultural crafts), exceptions may be approved in advance by TEPA in coordination with school partners. Any approved items will be stored and managed by program staff.

Body Alterations: Students are not permitted to obtain tattoos, piercings, or any other body modifications while on a TEPA program, even with parental consent. Students may only enter their assigned rooms unless granted explicit permission by a TEPA Program Staff member.

Rooming: Students are not allowed to enter any room not assigned to them unless given direct permission by a TEPA Program Staff member. Any student who is in a room other than their own may result in disciplinary action.  Unauthorized room access may result in disciplinary action.

Sex and Sexual Acts: In order to promote an experience that is safe and inclusive of all students, and respectful of local cultural norms, students are not permitted to engage in any sexual acts during TEPA programs. Exclusive relationships and/or public displays of affection, even if consensual, are also not considered appropriate behavior while on a TEPA program. These expectations help ensure the emotional and physical safety of all participants and maintain a positive group dynamic. Any violation of this rule may result in immediate expulsion from the program based on TEPA’s best judgment and understanding of the situation.

Sexual Harassment: TEPA is committed to maintaining a learning environment that is free from sexual harassment and misconduct. Students must refrain from engaging in any inappropriate or unwelcome behavior of a sexual nature and are encouraged to report any violations directly to staff members.  Inappropriate actions include, without limitation:

  • Gender-based harassment, seductive behavior, or coercion
  • Solicitation of sexual activity through promises of reward or threats of punishment
  • Assault or unwanted physical contact
  • Comments, jokes, or gestures that target or demean someone based on gender or sexuality
  • Whistling or making animalistic noises towards an individual
  • Standing too close, brushing against, or blocking another person’s movement
  • Giving gifts or leaving sexually suggestive items
  • Repeatedly asking someone to socialize after they have declined or shown disinterest
  • Displaying, watching, or distributing sexually explicit or offensive materials (physically or virtually)

Any form of sexual harassment is strictly prohibited and may result in immediate dismissal from the program.

Water Safety: Students may only swim or participate in water-based activities under direct TEPA Program Staff supervision or, if applicable, school-designated adult supervision. Students must follow all rules communicated by lifeguards, guides, or staff and may be required to pass a swim test before participating in certain activities. Swimming alone or engaging in unauthorized water sports is prohibited.

Cell Phones: Students may bring personal phones; however, access is typically limited to designated free time as outlined in each program’s daily schedule. Outside of approved times, phones will be collected and securely stored by TEPA Program Staff. Repeated misuse of devices may result in confiscation for the remainder of the program. Partner schools may set more or less restrictive technology policies; TEPA will support implementation of the chosen policy.

Respect for Local Cultural Norms: Students are expected to act as respectful guests in the host country. This includes following guidance from TEPA staff on culturally appropriate clothing, greetings, gestures, and community interactions. Respecting local customs, traditions, and religious practices is essential to building positive relationships and maintaining program partnerships.

Respect for Program Staff, Instructors and Students:

Our program is committed to providing a safe, inclusive environment for all participants. Discrimination, racism, microaggressions, or bullying of any kind are not tolerated. Students must show respect and civility toward peers, Program Staff, and Instructors at all times. Program students come from all walks of life and actively embrace diversity, fostering a culture of acceptance, inclusion, and mutual respect for all. We honor and value every individual, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, socioeconomic background, or physical, sensory, or mental health condition. Any use of offensive language, harassment, intimidation, or behavior disruptive to the goals of the program may result in disciplinary action or removal. Verbal or physical threats, as well as play fighting, will not be tolerated. Any use of offensive language, harassment, intimidation, or behavior disruptive to the goals of the program may result in disciplinary action or removal. Verbal or physical threats, as well as play fighting, will not be tolerated.

Commitment to the Program: Students must be committed to the program. This means students will approach all program activities with an open mind and will participate in all aspects of the program. Students recognize that credit for community service hours is earned and not automatically rewarded. TEPA may reduce service hours in response to a violation of the Code of Conduct or lack of participation in the program.
